The sound of sliding, walking footsteps to music escapes from the dance studio and echoes throughout the basement hallway. Inside, the students diligently practice the routines to perfection. With only a few weeks until their next shows, the RM Dance Club (RMDC) strives to bring their best performance, rehearsing every Wednesday and Friday over lunch.
The RMDC has been offering students of all experience levels who love dance to come together and share ideas, dance moves and choreography since 2015. The club offers a variety of different dance styles, the main three being the hip-hop, K-pop and break dance. This year, they plan to hold workshops to incorporate a wider range of styles for students to experience and enjoy.
As the current president of RMDC, Senior Vismaya Mohindra teaches and organizes the choreography for all members. Member of the club since his first year, Mohindra appreciates the welcoming community close to the RMDC. “Being able to learn choreography, perform and even just hang out with people who have similar interests made my high school years incredibly fun. It’s also super cool to meet people from different grade levels that you wouldn’t normally meet, ”she said.
In addition to the close-knit community, the RMDC offers students the opportunity to express themselves and realize their passion for dance. RM does not offer elective dance classes, and some students may not have the chance to take dance classes outside of school, which may limit their experiences and opportunities to dance. Fortunately, the RMDC fills these gaps and brings together those who have a common interest in dance. As for Mohindra, she said: “I joined RMDC because I wanted to dance, but I couldn’t take classes outside of school. The RMDC has given me the chance to do so many interesting performances that otherwise would not have been available to me.
Each year the RMDC prepares to perform at RM International and the Common Grounds Assembly for students. The RM International performance is scheduled for December 20 in the evening, and the Common Grounds Assembly will be held on December 22 during school for students to watch. During these events, RMDC will perform three songs from three different styles.
In addition to performing live on stage, RMDC also features its content on Instagram. “Follow RMDC on Instagram at @rmdanceclub for cool dance content,” Mohindra said.
As performance dates get closer and closer, RMDC members will be hard at work, rehearsing in the studio and on stage, preparing to show off their best work for their shows. Be sure to see the RMDC in the spotlight in the coming weeks.
