The Studio by Ellensburg Dance Studio offers classes for all levels – The Observer

“For me personally,” said Sara Bachman-Rhodes, director of The Studio and owner of Happy 2 Move. “That’s one of my goals in what I do.”

Early morning light filtered through the windows, illuminating the mirrors lined up on the wall to reflect the dance floor.

“I see that in all kinds of art and sport, it’s like if I haven’t trained for six to ten years, I’m not allowed to participate,” Bachman-Rhodes said. “I just want our lives to be richer and fuller and to grow those confidences to come and do whatever makes your heart happy so that you go out into the world and be happy there too.”

The Studio is a dance studio located in downtown Ellensburg, working with the Ellensburg Dance Ensemble to offer classes for everyone ages two and up. Bachman-Rhodes encourages anyone interested in joining, regardless of past experience. The Studio works specifically to provide lessons at all levels, whether someone is looking for a recreational activity or a more advanced practice.

“We’re really working under the auspices of bringing dance to everyone in Ellensburg,” Bachman-Rhodes said. “We want to develop our ballet program for advanced dancers, but we also hope to offer a more recreational version so that everyone has their place to dance.

Bachman-Rhodes extends the invitation to attend classes to students, even offering a discount on regular prices.

“We would definitely like to have more [college students] and to build that connection with Central and the students there. Bachman-Rhodes said, “People are welcome and we often offer a discount to students at the center.”

The Studio teaches ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, hip hop, modern and creative movement. Among other things, they will offer musical theater and theater workshops over the summer.

Anyone interested in contacting the studio is free to reach out to them via their website, email, or by visiting the Studio.

As a relatively new company, The Studio has managed to keep its doors open to in-person classes so far with no vaccine requirement yet.

“We are considering the fall but we haven’t made any decision,” Bachman-Rhodes said.

Outside of the classes offered, Bachman-Rhodes also says they often rent out studio space to people looking for a practice room. In the future, she sees opportunities to rent the space for larger events such as dances.

“So far, we have individuals. I anticipate there will be plenty of opportunities for people to rent the space for a variety of things – gatherings, events, dances, rehearsals,” Bachman-Rhodes said. “We hope to be a meeting place for everyone in the community.”

The studio hopes to perform at the Kittitas County Fair with annual productions and a recital in 2022. According to Bachman-Rhodes, the Happy 2 Move children’s dance group was able to do an outdoor recital over the weekend last.
